Underworld Review

Sep 22 2003

Today I went to see Underworld. That movie with Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman;

“Selene (Beckinsale), a beautiful vampire warrior, is entrenched in a war between the vampire and werewolf races. Although she is aligned with the vampires, she falls in love with Michael (Speedman), a werewolf”
“An immortal battle for supremacy”

Storyline: On the scale of blockbuster movies, the tale was intriguing with good foundations. Despite this I feel the movie didn’t build itself up enough, much was skimmed over and merely mentioned for a better viewer understanding. There were no real dynamics to the story and as I have said before, when describing Equilibrium, this movie has merely skimmed the surface of something brilliant. That brilliance may in fact be a novel, stolen from White Wolf or whoever, but I don’t really care about this or any other illustrious vampire novels. The romance was hardly touched upon, and there was certainly little showing of “love felt” which may have in fact been the premise for this, them being evil and all. The film had no fun moments, chuckle tidbits or cheap jokes thrown in for light entertainment — this was a dark flick through and through, which is a good thing. A one liner joke would not have fitted, and I am pleased to see the lack of one. (note: Link in M:R is an example of cheap relief humor that I despised). The Wes Craven reference made me smile. Possible spoiler: The ending was exceptionally lame, movies should not set themselves up for sequels and they should at least round off what has just happened. This said, I still enjoyed the movie and would watch it again — the way in which you had to ask yourself “who is the bad guy at the moment?” pertaining to each other and humans, was interesting. Viktor, Lucian, Kraven and finally Michael, all fighting for the top spot throughout.

Acting: Not amazing and not sucky. The dialogue was poor in some places but the actors did a good job in covering that up for the most part. In film it always seems hard to make an English accent sound “not bad”, but Kate pulled it off. Props to that. Only a brit can properly do a brit accent. Robby Gee kicked butt too.

Effects: From complete trash to excellency. The werewolf morphing scenes were done well and overall they looked good. The scenes where the characters landed on their feet after a big jump or a fall were done flawlessly (lucian & car, selene & window, michael & window), although the pose in the last one was seemingly off and non fitting. Whipping scene was one of my favourite moments, with a culmination entirely fitting and well portrayed. The worst action sequence was the implausible car crash scene that was nearly as poor as the “lets drive off a cliff” in Neighbours (aussie soap). The most disappointing moment was when Viktor fell apart (standard pause and slide effect I have come to hate), I was hoping for a sword fight that would result in leather being sliced open to reveal hot white goth flesh — but alas, no. As for the X-men, Blade and Matrix rip offs; I don’t really care. The movie used an idea and it came out looking good, if it comes out good, why should I care about people cashing in on a good thing? Techno Metal Leather Fighting with guns and swords is cool in my books. If the movie was utter shit I would be complaining about now. This is a hypocrite moment.

Soundtrack: Thumbs up. Well used. Good show. Skinny Puppy? Yes.

I wasn’t bored, I wasn’t thrilled nor my heart pounding, but I wasn’t displeased and I did think to myself, “this is much better than I was expecting”. I got what I wanted. I got lots of Kate Beckinsale looking extremely hot in leather coupled with a great voice. I left a happy chappy. Still much to improve on, and if the sequel does this, rather than succumbing to the death that is hollywood writing, it will be worthy of my cash once again. Plus next time we need romance, sex and naked vampires.

Dear Selene

Whenever a creature dealt damage by Sengir Vampire this turn is put into a graveyard, a +1/+1 counter is put on Sengir Vampire. Now I have confirmed my allegiance to the underworld, can we make hot vampire sex?

Sincerely,
The Dark One.

Eva Redesigned

Sep 21 2003

Decided that the old layout, although nice, was not practical (e.g. too many small images to loads, errors occurring when viewed with different browsers — especially safari). Thus a new and simpler yet still elegant design has been forged.

Eastenders

Sep 19 2003

I feel I must air my views and opinions on the depression-fest called Eastenders (a soap). Yes, Eastenders, the ANGRY soap with ANGRY actions which manages to refrain from using the F word. Life like in every sense. Why can’t the sun come out and everyone be jolly for once? Then the square should get nuked in a mini attack by the pilots from japan who thought the dog shouldn’t have died in that one episode.

Dead Like Me

Sep 19 2003

Gagh I feel like shit. Headache and unhappy. On the upside though, today I was bought a new pair of suede shoes that are quite actually wonderful; had my hair cut by a man named Paul who was interested in my future prospects at university and watched a unique new show that was airing on Sky One called “Dead Like Me”. I’m hoping I will enjoy the rest of the series as I need a TV series to enjoy.

Listening to Sonic Youth while being frustrated I haven’t seen Pirates of the Caribbean yet.
