“I wish I was more excited about this one. I really do. I’m glad other people are all jazzed up. The script left me cold except for a few action beats. It’s basically the “white guy from the outside tossed in with people of a noble but misunderstood culture who learns from them, and who teaches them a few things, too” paradigm, with nothing particularly new added. Warner Bros. has a thing about telling historical films. I was told by an executive there one time that “good history is the history with white faces on it… faces we recognize. Bad history is everything else.” That pretty much sums up my problems with this one so far. Maybe Zwick will pull it out and make something breathtaking. Maybe Cruise will elevate it through sheer force of will. Maybe it will be great.
We’ll see.”
This sums up my feelings towards this. But can’t judge until viewed.
